‘Fast and Furious’ Spin-off Director David Leitch Talks ‘Hobbs and Shaw’ and ‘Atomic Blonde 2’

Deadpool 2 director David Leitch sat down for a new interview in which he offers up some details on the Fast and Furious spin-off Hobbs and Shaw, and provides a brief update on the potential for Atomic Blonde 2.

Hobbs and Shaw

David Leitch is a busy filmmaker. He has Deadpool 2 hitting theaters this year, and the Fast and Furious spin-off Hobbs and Shaw due out in 2019. And then there’s Atomic Blonde 2, which might bless us all with its presence in the not-too-distant future. In a new interview with Fandango, Leitch talked about his approach to Hobbs and Shaw, and how he hopes to “evolve the world” of the characters:

“[I]t’s actually been really fun starting to press this movie with Dwayne [Johnson] and Jason [Statham]. I couldn’t be happier. I have done quite a few movies with Jason as a second unit director and a choreographer. I know him really well. I think what attracted me to that franchise is they really want to do something different. They understood that I wanted to sort of evolve their world, outside of the Fast world, and give it its own imprint…you’re evolving, but you’re still being true to the DNA and the core of the characters that people love. I love that challenge, and doing it with Dwayne and Jason is like a dream. Those guys are hardworking, talented actors.”

The film will involve Fast and Furious characters Luke Hobbs (Johnson) and Deckard Shaw (Jason Statham) coming together for more high-octane adventures. The team-up between the characters was teased in last summer’s The Fate of the Furious. Unfortunately, Leitch doesn’t comment on whether or not Hobbs and Shaw will have justice for Han. We can only hope it does.

Atomic Blonde 2

And what of Atomic Blonde 2? Leitch helmed the neon-drenched 2017 spy thriller starring Charlize Theron as an alluring ass-kicker, and Theron has since said there’s been talk of a potential sequel. Leitch doesn’t have much info on that sequel yet, but he confirmed that there’s definitely been talk of Atomic Blonde 2. They just haven’t nailed-down a concept yet:

“I think that we’re really trying hard to come up with concepts…We’re still working. There’s a lot of ideas floating around of what the sequel could be, and I think people would love to see Lorraine on another mission. I know I would.”

Atomic Blonde was a big style-over-substance movie, but I’m perfectly okay with that. The movie was a lot of fun, and I’d love to see Leitch and Theron work together again to make a stylish sequel.

Deadpool 2

Both Hobbs and Shaw and Atomic Blonde 2 are in the somewhat-far future. As for the fast-approaching Deadpool 2, Leitch says that everyone involved with the film “did our best to expand the action, and in a general sense, just make it bigger. In terms of the tone, and the fun, and the DNA of a Deadpool movie, you’re going to get everything you expect and more.”

I’m a fan of Leitch’s work, but I’m not a big fan of the first Deadpool. So perhaps I’ll just exit this post right here, before someone gets mad at me for saying something negative about the Merc with a Mouth.

Deadpool 2 opens on May 18, 2018. Hobbs and Shaw hits theaters on July 26, 2019.

In this edition of Sequel Bits:

  • Dwayne Johnson shares a behind-the-scenes Hobbs and Shaw image
  • Another behind-the-scenes look at Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom
  • A new poster for Mission: Impossible – Fallout
  • Get a behind-the-scenes look at that Doom reboot
  • Casting news for the Rabid remake

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Jason Statham and director David Leitch got together recently for a Hobbs and Shaw production meeting, and the Rock decided to let us all know about it. The Fast and Furious spin-off is due out next year, and while you wait for official filming to begin, take some solace in this image (or technically, images – there are two) of three men smiling. “We have a lot of fun surprises in store with our movie and what an opportunity for us to smartly build out our beloved Fast and Furious franchise with our spinoff,” writes Johnson. We’ll see! Hobbs and Shaw will open August 2, 2019.

Jurassic World has been posting some nice videos featuring nice man Chris Pratt doing nice things on the set of Fallen Kingdom. They’re called “Jurassic Journals”, and while they haven’t been particularly exciting, they have offered a glimpse into the day-to-day grind of filming a big Hollywood movie. Here, Pratt talks to “Edge Arm Driver” Dean Bailey. The Edge Arm is a huge steady-cam-like contraption mounted to a truck, used for capturing big chase sequences. It’s designed to remain perfectly still even as the car it’s mounted to bounces up and down over the terrain. Kind of neat! Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom opens June 22, 2018.

I don’t know about you, but I am pumped for Mission: Impossible – Fallout. I really enjoy these films, and I really enjoy watching Tom Cruise risk his life over and over just to entertain audiences. There’s a new Fallout trailer on the way, but in the meantime, here’s a new poster. It’s not exactly the best poster, as far as movie posters go. But it does feature Henry Cavill‘s glorious mustache, so that’s something. Mission: Impossible – Fallout opens July 27, 2018.

Doom is getting rebooted as a new (probably direct-to-VOD) film. It looks like rehearsals for the movie are currently underway, and Nina Bergman, who appears in the film, uploaded this behind-the-scenes video of people running around pretending to shoot guns. Bergman also posted two other videos. One is a cave being used as a set for the film. The other features Bergman getting ready to film. There’s not a lot of detail here, but these videos at least confirm the new Doom movie is really happening.

The Soska Sisters (American Mary) are getting ready to remake David Cronenberg‘s Rabid, and they’ve just lined-up their lead. Laura Vandervoort, who was recently in Jigsaw, will star in the film, per Coming Soon. “This terrifying and brilliant script has already proven its market appealand now with the casting of Laura Vandervoort, we are another step closer to bringing Rabid to audiences worldwide,” said Film Mode Entertainment President Clay Epstein. Producer Michael Walker added: ““We are thrilled to be working with Laura Vandervoort on Rabid who is the perfect fit for the role of Rose. She is an incredibly versatile actress who is quick to take on characters in all genres, and effectively tackles every role she plays.” The original film focused on a young woman who “develops a taste for human blood after undergoing experimental plastic surgery, and her victims turn into rabid, blood-thirsty zombies who proceed to infect others, which turns into a city-wide epidemic.”

Some of the Deadpool 2 cast – Ryan Reynolds, Josh Brolin, Morena Baccarin, Julian Dennison, Leslie Uggams and Zazie Beetz – got together to on GMA to play a game called “Confessions.” I don’t know if you actually watch morning shows, but every now and then I’ll catch a snippet of one while waiting in a doctor’s office. They’re nightmarish extravaganzas where everyone is grinning, constantly, for seemingly no reason. This clip is no exception, but at least it has the Deadpool 2 cast to soften the blow. Deadpool 2 opens May 18, 2018.

Officially announced on the 5th/6th October (depending on your time zone) and will begin production next year.

David Leitch has stated that the film will feel different from the “Fast and Furious” franchise. Although it will be filled with action sequences, cars and elements that constructed “Fast and Furious”, it’ll feel different from the series.

This film is a spinoff from The Fast and the Furious franchise. Idris Elba, who will play the antagonist, previously starred alongside Paul Walker in Takers (2010).

This film is scheduled to be released on Jason Stathams 52nd birthday (7/26/2019).

Leitch is the first white director of the franchise since Rob Cohen.

This film will represent 2 Fast 2 Furious (2003) when a cop teams up with their friend or a partner in crime to stop a criminal mastermind.

Na początku byłem sceptycznie nastawiony do tego, że Dwayne Johnson i Statham wystąpią w Szybkich i Wściekłych, ale w ósemce to tak naprawdę tylko oni trzymali poziom. Hobbs and Shaw: Idris Elba Cast as the Villain for Fast & Furious Spinoff

Hobbs and Shaw will continue Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham’s action flick chemistry from The Fate of the Furious.

Hobbs and Shaw is now officially happening in 2019. With 2017’s The Fate of the Furious helping the Fast & Furious franchise to, once again, leave its box office competition in the dust with another $1 billion-plus global performance, its direct spinoff, Hobbs and Shaw, will reunite that film’s reluctant onscreen duo of Dwayne Johnson’s U.S. Secret Service agent, Luke Hobbs, and Jason Statham’s formerly-misguided-vengeance-seeking mercenary, turned good-ish guy, Deckard Shaw.

Hobbs and Shaw Villain

Idris Elba is set to smell what The Rock and The Transporter are cooking, since Variety is reporting that he’s joining Hobbs and Shaw to play the film’s villain.

While no further details were revealed about Elba’s antagonistic role, he will, nevertheless, join stars Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham on the Hobbs and Shaw marquee. Of course, the international English superstar, Elba, has fielded villain roles, having played – under heavy makeup – the role of Krall in Star Trek Beyond, as well as the voice role as scheming Bengal tiger Shere Khan in director Jon Favreau’s live-action adaptation of The Jungle Book. Plus, he played the role of a brutal African warlord in director Cary Fukunaga’s Netflix-distributed film, Beasts of No Nation.

He%u2019s a baaaaaad man.
Welcoming my dude @idriselba with tattooed and open arms to our #HobbsAndShaw Fast & Furious spin-off movie.
Every hero is only as good as their villain. Cue the music. let%u2019s dance. https://t.co/GD7dVrtNRl

Hobbs & Shaw Director

Hobbs & Shaw will be directed by David Leitch.

Please welcome David Leitch as the director of the Fast & Furious Hobbs and Shaw spinoff. pic.twitter.com/RnpN0RMko9

— Fast & Furious (@FastFurious) April 12, 2018

The director news was not exactly a bombshell when it arrived back in April, since a trade report from February had already claimed that Leitch was studio Universal’s top choice for the chair.

Leitch, a veteran stunt coordinator, brings directorial experience from May’s Deadpool 2, 2017 Charlize Theron actioner Atomic Blonde, and was uncredited alongside Chad Stahelski on 2014’s Keanu Reeves action franchise launcher, John Wick.

Hobbs & Shaw Details

Universal started plans for a spinoff film for the Fast and Furious franchise immediately after the arrival of The Fate of the Furious, which brandished the initial buddy-cop-esque team-up of former Fast and Furious film antagonists-turned-allies. The studio immediately held meetings designed to narrow down concepts with intent to broaden the franchise. Once that was done, the franchise’s primary writer, Chris Morgan, got to work on the Hobbs and Shaw script.

Johnson made his franchise debut as Hobbs in 2011’s Fast Five as a lawman hunting our rogue heroes. By contrast, Statham’s Shaw was the primary villain in 2015’s Furious 7; a run that was kicked off in the post-credits scene of 2013’s Fast & Furious 6 in which he blew up heroic Fast and Furious teammate Han Lue (Sung Kang) in Tokyo. However, Fate later saw the incarcerated Shaw reluctantly teamed up with Johnson’s Hobbs to track down Vin Diesel’s off-the-reservation Dominic Toretto. Surprisingly, the partnership seemed to hold solid by the end of the film, despite Shaw’s former homicidal deeds.

While it was recently announced that the Fast and Furious franchise will finally park itself, with an upcoming, Dwayne Johnson-less, ninth film (set for April 19, 2019) and a tenth, and final, entry (set for April 2, 2021), it’s clear that this high-speed franchise is not running out of gas by any means, with this star-studded spinoff film glistening on the far horizon.

Hobbs and Shaw Release Date

Hobbs and Shaw is set to arrive on July 26, 2019. It will make A LOT of money – just because.

Impossible – Fallout, Halloween, Hobbs & Shaw, The Predator – /Film

In this edition of Sequel Bits:

  • An incredible outdoor screening of Mission: Impossible – Fallout
  • The newest Halloween movie gets an official rating
  • Jason Statham talks about how the Fast & Furious spin-off will be different from that franchise’s other movies
  • A new poster for Shane Black‘s The Predator
  • Arnold Schwarzenegger has begun shootingTerminator 6
  • And more!

2,000 feet, 2,000 people, 4 hours of hiking. The most impossible screening of #MissionImpossible Fallout. Thank you all for coming! I wish I could have been there. pic.twitter.com/ufi1FkP6KI

Superstar Tom Cruise shared this photo of Paramount’s jaw-dropping special screening of Mission: Impossible – Fallout, which took place at the top of Norway’s Preikestolen, also known as “Pulpit Rock,” the site of the movie’s phenomenal action climax. This reminds me of the Alamo Drafthouse’s Rolling Roadshow screenings, which show movies at the actual locations where they were filmed. They once showed Close Encounters of the Third Kind at Devil’s Tower in Wyoming, and I imagine them seeing this and adding it to their list of dream screenings. I wouldn’t be surprised to see another one of these pop up in a few years.

In a quick red carpet interview with Collider, Cruise revealed that he and writer/director Christopher McQuarrie have entertained the idea of filming a Mission: Impossible sequence in space. M:I 7, anyone?

While we’ve already seen some set photos and one official photo revealing the women of Terminator 6, TheTerminatorFans have figured out that franchise star Arnold Schwarzenegger has joined the cast on set in Budapest, Hungary to begin filming his portion of the movie. He’s back.

Terminator 6 arrives in theaters on November 22, 2019.

GeekTyrant points us to this new Chinese poster for The Predator, which features the title alien in the crosshairs – possibly the crosshairs of the Super Predator, the genetically enhanced Predator that seems like it will be the ultimate villain of this movie. The Predator hits theaters on September 14, 2018.

Rated R for horror violence and bloody images, language, brief drug use and nudity. #HalloweenMovie

— Ryan Turek (@_RyanTurek) August 1, 2018

Ryan Turek, the VP of feature film development at Blumhouse, recently shared on Twitter that the company’s upcoming Halloween sequel has officially received an R rating, and it sounds like it’s for all the reasons you’d expect from a movie like this. The trailer is killer and the Comic-Con footage was a blast, so we can’t wait to check this one out for ourselves when it arrives on October 19, 2018.

And finally, Collider caught up with actor Jason Statham and asked him about Hobbs and Shaw, the Fast & Furious spin-off movie that will see his character, Deckard Shaw, team up with Dwayne Johnson’s Luke Hobbs. The actor explained how the movie’s director is going to approach this story in a “real” way:

“I think Dave Leitch’s taste is a little more grounded and a little darker. If you see Atomic Blonde, and it is just superb, his taste is definitely in a world that is sort of how you described it. I think he’s looking to do something that doesn’t look exactly like a Fast movie. Although it’s the Fast characters, he’s trying to do his own thing with it and give it a real sense of credibility. I think Dave is going to get this one gritty, and real, and fucking hardcore…

He’s really efficient and he really cares about the characters. We’re trying to build out my [character’s] relationship with my sister and with my mother and what that means. What my relationship is with [recently cast villain] Idris [Elba] and all these other things. He really cares a lot…

He wants to have the raucous laughs, the funny shit, the intense action and the great drama and the meaningful stuff. Dwayne’s got his relationship with his mother and the daughter. There’s loads of good stuff in it. I’m fucking excited.”

Hobbs and Shaw hits theaters on July 26, 2019.
