As if we weren’t excited enough for Mid90s, Jonah Hill’s dip into the skateboarding culture of a ’90s-era LA, it’s now been revealed that the Golden Globe-winning duo of Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross will be helming the score.

Reznor and Ross, who previously scored the likes of The Social Network and Gone Girl, are a perfect fit, as Nine Inch Nails and Reznor, in particular, informed so much in terms of the era’s aesthetics.

Mid90s, which was written and directed by Hill, stars Sunny Suljic, Lucas Hedges, and Katherine Waterston. It opens on October 19th, though it’ll enjoy its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival, where we’ll be on the ground come September 6th. Revisit the movie’s trailer below.

Reznor and Ross are also set to score Waves, a new “dramatic musical” from Trey Edward Shults (It Comes At Night, Krisha).

‘Mid90s’ Trailer: Jonah Hill Skates Into Directorial Debut With Coming-Of-Age Dramatic Comedy

In the first trailer for Jonah Hill’s Mid90s, there are elements of comedy and drama, but it definitely leans into the drama.

The coming-of-age pic marks Hill’s directorial debut and it feels reminiscent of Larry Clark’s ’90s pic Kids — which seems appropriate considering the title. The movie follows Stevie (Sunny Suljic), a 13-year-old in ’90s-era LA who spends his summer navigating between a troubled home life and a group of new friends he meets at a Motor Avenue skate shop.

The only funny part of the trailer is the exchange between a group of skater misfits and a security guard (played by the hilarious Jerrod Carmichael), who compares one of the long-haired kids to Sheryl Crow. Other than that, the movie seems pretty heavy. Considering Hill is known for his comedy, many probably expected him to make a side-splitting romp for his first time out as a director. But let’s not forget that Hill, who also wrote the film, has delivered more dramatic and subdued performances in True Story, Moneyball and Cyrus.

The movie also stars Lucas Hedges as an abusive brother as well as Alexa Demie. Scott Rudin, Ken Kao and Eli Bush are producing for A24. The movie is set to open in theaters October 19.

Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross Composed the Score for Jonah Hill’s ‘Mid90s’

Jonah Hill’s directorial debut Mid90s is set to debut on the fall film festival circuit next month, but there’s one more surprise in store: he nabbed a pair of incredible composers. Film Music Reporter reports that Oscar winners Trent Reznor and Aticus Ross have composed the original score for Mid90s, adding yet another layer of excitement to what was already an exciting project.

Hill wrote, produced, and directed the film, which follows a 13-year-old named Stevie over the course of a summer as he makes friends with a group of skaters. As the title suggests, the film takes place in the mid-1990s. This looks to be a very character-driven coming-of-age story a la Lady Bird, which shares both a producer (Scott Rudin) and a studio (A24) in common with Mid90s.

Reznor and Ross haven’t scored that many narrative features. Their groundbreaking score for The Social Network won them an Oscar, and they reteamed with director David Fincher on both The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and Gone Girl. Their last narrative feature score was for the 2016 Mark Wahlberg thriller Patriots Day, and beyond that they scored the climate change documentary Before the Flood and Ken Burns’ docuseries The Vietnam War.

So yeah, if you needed yet another reason to be excited for Mid90s, here it is. The film will have its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival next month before opening in theaters on October 19th.
