Peppermint Trailer (2018)

Trailer for Peppermint, starring Jennifer Garner, John Ortiz, John Gallagher Jr. and Juan Pablo Raba.

Peppermint is an action thriller which tells the story of young mother Riley North (Jennifer Garner) who awakens from a coma after her husband and daughter are killed in a brutal attack on the family. When the system frustratingly shields the murderers from justice, Riley sets out to transform herself from citizen to urban guerilla. Channeling her frustration into personal motivation, she spends years in hiding honing her mind, body and spirit to become an unstoppable force — eluding the underworld, the LAPD and the FBI — as she methodically delivers her personal brand of justice.

Just in case you were doubting that this film’s action is going to be up to par, know that the man behind the camera, Pierre Moral, is the same guy that gave us District B13 and Taken.

At first I didn’t know what to think of Peppermint. The film’s trailer starts out like a Garner-lead family film, and I immediately lost interest. But then we see the title card mentioning Taken, and I can’t help but be intrigued. Splash on a little more criminal courtroom drama, and the trailer finally notches the action up to an eleven.

And, though I can’t believe my eyes, I once again can believe that Garner can make a pretty believable action star. I’m assuming she remembers some of her training from the Elektra days, and they still come into play here. It’s been over a decade, but dang does she look like she got fit for this one. Way to commit to the role!

Critic Reviews for Peppermint Candy (Bakha satang)

This is Korea’s millennial elegy, filtering its search for times past through a confection no less bittersweet than Proust’s madeleine.

The film offers a heartbreaking drama told in reverse chronology and spanning twenty years in both the life of the main character and the political history of Korea.

It’s a story about the original sin of a nation as well as one character. There has rarely been a better film made, ever

Audience Reviews for Peppermint Candy (Bakha satang)

The problem is the lack of a plot. The film meanders along and expects you to care for the lead character, rather than giving you a reason to.

Yeong-ho wants to kill himself, and then he does. That’s the first ten minutes sorted, then the next 110 minutes shows how he became what he became, by going backwards through the previous twenty years of his life. As one of the few reverse chronology films, it’s definitely worth a watch, though I found it harder to get involved fully in his life when such a large time span was being covered with a handful of key moments. The sweetness of the final scene stays though.

Peppermint Candy is a film that is all about character development and if you like this type of drama you will enjoy this movie.

The span of the plot takes place from 1979-1999. Let me rephrase that. The span of the plot takes place from 1999-1979. Yes, the twenty years of one man’s life is told in 130 minutes and in reverse order. It all starts in 1999 with the demise of our main character, Yong-Ho. As the film progresses, or reverses, you get to see how Yong-Ho ends up the way he does.

The nice thing about the storytelling is the fact that you get to see not only the change in Korea, but the change in character for Yong-Ho. A lot does happen in 20 years after all. On the flip side, there is nothing really eventful, with the exception of the 1980 segment near the ending. If you are not able to appreciate the slow burn drama, this will be a huge bore. Believe me when I say that 2+ hours of this doesn’t fly by.

The soundtrack is mellow and appropriate while the camerawork is professional. Both of these help with the success of this film.

Kyung-gu Sol heads the film and does a nice job at changing personalities from the beginning to the end. The 2 female leads, So-ri Moon and Yeo-jin Kim, do good jobs as well.

Peppermint Candy takes a nice approach with the storytelling and it deserves the attention that it gets. Too bad it isn’t exciting enough for someone like me.

Lee Chang-Dong again astounds me with another startling film. Unlike most films we don’t see a character progress as the scenes are played in reverse chronological order. The protagonist regresses and we see a harsh, bitter suicidal and violent man turn back into the sweet and gentle student he once was. Unlike many comments this is nothing like Memento, in Memento the scenes all linked together here however each segmen is set years apart. Not only do we see a fragile mans life unravelled before us each part also comments on a major political/historical moment in Koreas recent past, and not in a preachy dull way either. A film that at first makes you confront the main character, before forcing you to withstand him before finally accepting him. Well paced and expertly crafted this is another great entry into what is shaping to be a fabulous and unblemished filmogrophy.

‘Peppermint’ Trailer: Jennifer Garner Returns To Action

Posted on Thursday, May 31st, 2018 by Chris Evangelista

Finally, someone decided to stop casting Jennifer Garner as suburban moms and let her kick some ass in an action role again. Garner stars in Peppermint, a new action-thriller from Taken director Pierre Morel. Garner plays a woman out for justice after waking up from a coma to find her family murdered. Watch the Peppermint trailer below.

Peppermint Trailer

I really like Jennifer Garner, and I’m happy to see her get back in the action game. Garner has spent such a long time playing suburban moms or popping-up in commercials that it’s easy to forget she comes from an action background. Her breakout role was on the J.J. Abrams series Alias, and she even got to lead her own action movie once – Elektra, a spin-off from Daredevil. Now Garner appears in Peppermint, a revenge-thriller that sounds a little like Death Wish Starring Jennifer Garner.

In Peppermint, Garner plays a wife and mother “who awakens from a coma after her husband and daughter are killed in a brutal attack on the family. When the system frustratingly shields the murderers from justice, Riley sets out to transform herself from citizen to urban guerilla. Channeling her frustration into personal motivation, she spends years in hiding honing her mind, body and spirit to become an unstoppable force – eluding the underworld, the LAPD and the FBI – as she methodically delivers her personal brand of justice.”

Peppermint comes from Pierre Morel, director of the first Taken film, and co-stars John Gallagher Jr., John Ortiz, Method Man, Richard Cabral, and Annie Ilonzeh.

I have no idea if this film will turn out well, but I’m hoping for the best, just because I like the idea of Garner doing action again. During a CinemaCon presentation for the film, the actress said:

“The thing about Alias that made it so special was J.J.’s [Abrams] script, and how compelling the stakes were for that character all the time…To do action for the sake of action has never interested me but this script was so smart. There’s no bigger stake than your children and nobody had never asked me in a smart way to do something as a mom for her child.”

Garner also added: “This was to avenge your child’s death, and there’s no bigger reason to go out and get into really good shape and then kill people.” Well said, Jennifer Garner. Well said.

Peppermint opens September 7, 2018.
